No matter what shoes you’re wearing, or why you’re walking around New York City, your feet start to hurt. If you’ve been experiencing chronic foot pain or problems with the ankles, knees, hips, back or neck, either as a normal occurrence each day or as an inconvenient part of your vacation, Adler Footcare may be able to help by fitting you with custom orthotics.

What are custom orthotics?

Whether you’re looking for custom orthotics in New York or Timbuktu, orthotics are flexible, lightweight devices ranging from felt pads to custom inserts that slip into the shoe to correct an abnormal or irregular walking pattern caused by the foot not bearing weight properly. If the foot is not bearing weight properly it can lead to bone, tendon and soft tissue problems, as well as deformities like bunions and hammertoes. While there are over-the-counter orthotics available that may help the problem, they normally will not correct it. Custom fit orthotics are the best treatment option available.

Adler Footcare offers patients custom orthotics made to fit an individual’s unique foot structure, allowing them to stand, walk and run more efficiently and comfortably.

Custom fit orthotics come in many shapes, sizes, and materials, but fall into three main categories:

  1. Rigid Orthotics are custom orthotics designed to control motion in the two major foot joints that lie directly below the ankle joint. They are primarily used for walking or dress shoes. They are made from a mold that the podiatrist takes from a plaster cast or image scan of the foot, and are composed of a firm material such as plastic or carbon fiber.
  2.
  3. Soft Orthotics are custom fit orthotics that are primarily protective in nature, designed to absorb shock, increase balance, and take pressure off uncomfortable or sore spots on the foot. Like rigid custom orthotics, soft orthotics are made from a mold that the podiatrist takes from a plaster cast or image scan of the foot, but are typically made of softer, more cushioned materials.
  4.
  5. Semi-Rigid Orthotics are custom orthotics that provide functional control, balance and protection when walking or participating in sports. They also help athletes ease pain that comes from intense training and competition and are often prescribed to children to treat flatfoot, in-toeing and out-toeing. Semi-Rigid custom fit orthotics are made of layers of soft material that is reinforced with a more rigid material.
